What are Casement Windows and Awning Windows?

Casement windows are hinged at the side and open outward, to the left or to the right. They are also referred to as crank windows, since they are opened using a cranking mechanism.

Awning windows are very similar in style; however, they are hinged at the top and open outward, allowing ventilation even during light rain.

Both casement windows and windows easily glide open or shut with the turn of an easy-to-reach handle.

Where are Casement and Awning Windows Commonly Used?

Awning and casement windows are often used in in combination with other window styles, and work well where ventilation is required, such as in kitchens and bathrooms.  Since casement windows open outward all the way, they provide maximum ventilation and natural light. They are also frequently used where unobstructed views are desired as in a sitting room or sunroom.  Awning windows are typically placed higher on walls for privacy.
